Name of the Book : Room
Author : Emma Donoghue
You might have heard about this book or this plot already. A woman kidnapped ,kept in a soundproof outhouse raped everyday by her captor. The plot till here is surely gruesome and pathetic that we will skip the book undoubtedly. But what makes this book stand out ?
It has been narrated to us by five year old jack. The author does a wonderful job in bringing his innocence and child spirit into the plot. Never once you see a rape scene in this book or some tied up BDSM kind of brutal in here.
Even in the likes of "Life is Beautiful" in which the father entertains his son in a Nazi camp, Ma doesn't just fool around. She wants him sane, secure and escape from that hell hole. The sacrifices she makes explains the mother-son bonding.
The books begins on Jack's fifth birthday. What can you do in a eleven foot by eleven foot room in which you don't go out for the past five years ? Jack has a million things to do .
"Ma" as mentioned by Jack is the real hero of the book. We see her through Jack's adoration in this book. But can you imagine what it takes for a woman to keep her spirits up and raise her child as sanely as possible after being kidnapped at the age of 18 and being raped innumerable times. She trains jack with some exercise , they improve his vocabulary with some TV shows, they shout into their open roof every night in case someone might hear them and rescue them.
The Book has been divided into five parts.
Each part is so wonderfully gripping and narrated to perfection that you cannot put down the book at all. (I read all 400 pages in one single go).
Their Sunday treats, Ma breast feeding Jack till 5 years,The books they read to keep themselves sane, The plan B escape, Their adaptation towards a normal life, the hard hitting truth about a still born sister, ma trying to end her life after the escape , the last sentence of the book, there are lot more to mention simply the best.
So this is book is Just not a kidnap story. All of us are being held captive in some ways. We simply say "I never had that chance he had/ she had". This book is all about creating the chances, taking the shots, selling your soul to the devil to create a life.
No matter how tough you are, you will cry reading this book. Tears for beloved Jack, tears for yourself, tears for humanity .
You cant rate this book . If you still go for marks, its a 10/10.
Happy Reading.
Life is Beautiful ,
With love,
Arvi
