Review of "My First Kiss" By Sridharan Palanisamy

My dear friend Mr. Aravind Sethuraam have succeeded in his debut novel "My First Kiss". he is been awarded fourth spot in a competition in which 3,50,000 plus participants took part. I pay my tribute to him as a review.

Name of the Book: “MY FIRST KISS”.

As soon as you read this title we would expect a fully fledged romantic novel, and that too when Mr. Aravind Sethuraman’s debut novel is with such a name what else would you expect. But to our utter surprise Aravind took a hot burning social issue like “Lankan Tamil Welfare” and to be honest he had handled it effectively and done justice. Since i know about Aravind in and out i take the privilege of giving a detailed description and review of his debut novel “MY FIRST KISS”.

Characters:

I must appreciate his work in selection of the names given to the characters in this book. Lead role is been given the names as: Dhiraviyam, Rukmani, Harini, Sridharan , Deepak Sachdeva, Sampath Kumar, Vazhavan, Madhumitha, Arjun and last but not the least Aravind himself.

Plot 1: Love

The story begins when our lazy Dhiraviyam is eying on his Facebook account. There he finds Rukmani and they fight in the beginning and as usual in the end, according to logic of viewers they fall in love with each other. This love plot of the story brings you into the book as a magic spell.

The way Dhiraviyam proposes Rukmani is really awesome and i bet we would read those chapters twice. Rukmani’s surprise birthday party to Dhirav is the most excellent chapter of the book. As you can expect our author Aravind Sethuraman is at his best in love plot.

Plot 2: Sister – Brother Cliché

Aravind Sethuraman is the only kid in his family so when he told me he was about to include brother and sister’s care and love as his novel’s secondary theme i was sure that he would make a mess. Again i was fooled by him. Madhumitha is the name of the sister character in this book.

He had given the brother and sister’s coating mostly in nostalgic scenes so it takes your emotions to the next level. In the end of part one, we couldn’t control the feel like, “Wish i had a sister like Madhumitha”. He again proves his asset of writing in this plot.

Plot3: Friendship.

He did not give a particular chapter for this plot but it’s the main theme line of this book. From Sridhar’s birthday party till Aravind gets hurt in the battle field, all his friends’ character play a major role. Two words review for this plot would be “Justice Done”.

Since i knew this author fellow, all his four friends depict one of his characters. Dhiraviyam is a romantic fellow and so is Aravind Sethuraman. Sachdeva is described as food hunter and we all know about Aravind Sethuraman’s appetite.

Aravind comes as Aravind itself with his marine course and his fetish for books. Sridhar is as such as me. I feel so proud that he has done honour to our friendship by such a role in his debut book.

Plot4: Revolution in Chennai.

This is the only track i wonder Aravind Sethuraman went slightly off course. He had tried to merge the romantic fantasy with a completely serious second part in Srilanka. Though he gave all his might in the merging process, we get the feel that the hook must be a bit stronger for such a course in Lanka.

We must appreciate the chapter in which Rukmani and Dhiraviyam meets the commissioner, CM and the press members. One word review for this is “Good.”

Plot 5: Srilanka.

Again Aravind Sethuraman get backs to his form and hits each and every delivery out of the park. The force with which the chapters come is mind blowing. You may even cry when the small kid “Vazhavan” dies and for the thing with that tomb stone.

The operation plot, sugarcane filed (where Dhirav reads the planner of Harini), making of red cross symbol, searching Rukku after the bomb blast, a lot more small incidents like this makes you understand the actual happenings in Srilanka. Two words review for this plot would be “Hats off”.

Demerits:

1.Why the hell did you use words like fuck you, bitches and bastard in your book? It felt unnecessary.

2.There is no agriculture college in Chennai my dear. You could have made me study some other course at least in your novel.

3.Your brutal attack about the Lankan army. I know it is true but you could have reduced the violence in second part.

Rating:

1.For your use of simple English and making the book such an easy go through.
2.For extracting the essence of brother and sister relationship.
3.For such a wonderful romantic tale.
4.For the spirit of friendship.
5.For your social welfare and helping spirit.
6.For portraying the history and tradition of our Tamil Nadu.
7.For the ideas of effective usage of social networks.
8.For the love story of Harini and Shiva Kumar.
9.For depicting the tale of Lankan Tamil right from 1100 AD.
10.For your “First Kiss”

So you get 10/10 here.

I reduce 0.5 for the use of non parliamentary words everywhere.
I reduce 0.5 for your easy going revolution with students, that doesn’t stick with our hearts.
I reduce 0.5 for your too much violence in the second part.

Actual Score: 8.5/ 10.
