Book Review - The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

You book lover? Grab this book !
You dog lover? definitely grab this book ! So this book is in a dog's perspective of things. A dog named Enzo is the protagonist. This book is not all that page turner or that gripping plot or that cheesy young adult stuffs ! This book is life !  Not everyone's life is so perfect. And yeah we have very big worries of not being able to dress like our facebook friends, not being able to click a perfect DP, not being helped by people who we took for granted, not being a priority of anyone and the list goes on and on and on.
But in this story a family falls apart and the father/ husband is trying to do his best in making this workout. We could not say it is a happy ever after, but it is something that will keep us motivated to look forward in life !
I don't like dogs. But this dog seems okay. But you see there are times in the book we get the sensation that the plot or the dialogue has been repeated ! A bit draggy at times. a little murky at times.

So what made me love this book ?
A dog that watches documentaries, car racing, even barks twice in a racing car ( you will get it once you read the book), who desperately wants to be human. He has a philosophy of his own  and this book at times reminds me of  "The Dalai Lama's Cat". This author has handled a dog's pov so he won't be allowed into hospitals, few areas where the actual drama might actually happen. So that is a let down at times !
This book takes you in a roller coaster ride. We go through happiness, blissful moments, sadness, pain, empathy, giving up, fight back, never-letting-go attitude. It is worth it.
So is it an intellectual or a modern day marvel ? No !
We can feel all this emotions at times but the connecting factor is not upto the mark. It is like a certain chapter is happiness, a certain one is about sadness, a certain is on philosophy but it didn't connect as a story or conveyed to the reader as a part of the story.
But the sheer experience of reading this book is good enough for a reader who would love reading fiction.

Quotes I loved :
1. “There is no dishonor in losing the race. There is only dishonor in not racing because you are afraid to lose.”
2. “He died that day because his body had served its purpose. His soul had done what it came to do, learned what it came to learn, and then was free to leave.”
3. "To live every day as if it had been stolen from death, that is how I would like to live. To feel the joy of life, as Eve felt the joy of life. To separate oneself from the burden, the angst, the anguish that we all encounter every day. To say I am alive, I am wonderful, I am. I am. That is something to aspire to.”
4. "The race is long - to finish first, first you must finish.”

You will enjoy reading. Will recommend  it to the age group of  15 to 50.
A good read . 4/5.
With Love,
Arvi
